How Are Broken Toes Treated?

The bones that are located in each toe are known as phalanges. They can easily fracture if a heavy object falls on one or more of them, or if a toe is stubbed against a piece of furniture. Common symptoms many patients experience can include bruising, redness, and swelling, in addition to difficulty walking. Treatment can begin after a proper diagnosis is performed, which generally consists of having an X-ray taken. Treatment may consist of implementing a process that is referred to as buddy taping. It is a procedure that tapes the affected toe to the toe next to it, and this can be helpful in providing the stability that is needed as the healing process occurs. A broken toe is considered to be severe if the bone protrudes through the skin, and surgery may be necessary for complete healing. If you have fractured your toe, it is strongly suggested that you speak with a podiatrist as quickly as possible so they can determine what the best course of treatment is for you.

What Is a Broken Toe?

Treating Neuropathy

Neuropathy can cause the hands and feet to tingle and become numb. The nerves that recognize the position of your hands and feet and sense hot and cold, are particularly impacted by neuropathy.  Neuropathy may be caused by numerous factors such as age, malnourishment, alcohol use, medications, and from cancer or the treatment being received. If you are experiencing any of the symptoms of neuropathy that can include numbness, tingling, sensitivity to temperature, weakness or clumsiness, it is important that you consult with a podiatrist immediately. A podiatrist will be able to help determine the cause of the neuropathy and provide the necessary treatment. What Is Neuropathy?

Neuropathy is a condition that leads to damage to the nerves in the body. Peripheral neuropathy, or neuropathy that affects your peripheral nervous system, usually occurs in the feet. Neuropathy can be triggered by a number of different causes. Such causes include diabetes, infections, cancers, disorders, and toxic substances.

Symptoms of Neuropathy Include:

  • Numbness
  • Sensation loss
  • Prickling and tingling sensations
  • Throbbing, freezing, burning pains
  • Muscle weakness

Those with diabetes are at serious risk due to being unable to feel an ulcer on their feet. Diabetics usually also suffer from poor blood circulation. This can lead to the wound not healing, infections occurring, and the limb may have to be amputated.

Treatment

To treat neuropathy in the foot, podiatrists will first diagnose the cause of the neuropathy. Figuring out the underlying cause of the neuropathy will allow the podiatrist to prescribe the best treatment, whether it be caused by diabetes, toxic substance exposure, infection, etc. If the nerve has not died, then it’s possible that sensation may be able to return to the foot.

Pain medication may be issued for pain. Electrical nerve stimulation can be used to stimulate nerves. If the neuropathy is caused from pressure on the nerves, then surgery may be necessary.

What is a Corn?

Corns are formed by a buildup of hard and dead skin that usually forms around the toe joints. The most common cause of corns is poorly fitting shoes, but activities like running and climbing can lead to corns as well. They normally form in a cone-like shape and work as the foot’s method of protection from friction. Ultimately this extra skin can cause uncomfortable pressure on the feet. Corns are very common and are also treatable. The most common solutions are to wear properly fitting shoes and to take pressure off of the corn as often as possible. If you continue to experience issues with corns, or you have preexisting conditions like diabetes, poor blood flow, or fragile skin, please consult with a podiatrist.

Blisters on the feet can be quite uncomfortable. They can induce pain, and may cause people who enjoy hiking to walk slower than they usually would. Blisters occur as a result of excess friction, which is often provoked by the shoes or socks that are worn. They appear to be a bubble that is filled with liquid. This is the method the body uses to naturally protect the damaged skin. When new skin has formed, the blister will gradually drain. Many hikers will use a protective covering over the blister, and this may be helpful in preventing premature draining. When healing from a sprained ankle, it’s important that you slowly and carefully build the muscles around the affected area. If you’re recovering from a mild sprain, you should be able to start practicing low impact exercises within a few days of having rested your foot. If you’re somebody who likes to regularly stay active, it’s important that you adapt your exercise routine around your sprained ankle, that way you can prevent injuring it further. The exercises you perform to help heal your ankle should focus on benefiting your range of motion, balance, strength, and flexibility. One simple exercise that can be performed to help your range of motion is referred to as ankle circles. This exercise is done by sitting in a chair with your ankle resting on the opposite knee. Slowly begin to rotate your ankle in a clockwise motion, then counterclockwise. Switch ankles and repeat this motion. Another stretch known as band pushes can be particularly beneficial for strengthening your ankle joints. To perform this stretch, sit flat on the floor with your legs straight out and place a resistance band around the ball of your foot. Stretching the Feet

Stretching the muscles in the foot is an important part in any physical activity. Feet that are tight can lead to less flexibility and make you more prone to injury. One of the most common forms of foot pain, plantar fasciitis, can be stretched out to help ease the pain. Stretching can not only ease pain from plantar fasciitis but also prevent it as well. However, it is important to see a podiatrist first if stretching is right for you. Podiatrists can also recommend other ways to stretch your feet. Once you know whether stretching is right for you, here are some excellent stretches you can do.

  • Using a foam roller or any cylindrical object (a water bottle or soda can will do), roll the object under your foot back and forth. You should also exert pressure on the object. Be sure to do this to both feet for a minute. Do this exercise three times each.
  • Similar to the previous one, take a ball, such as a tennis ball, and roll it under your foot while seated and exert pressure on it.
  • Grab a resistance band or towel and take a seat. If you are using a towel, fold it length wise. Next put either one between the ball of your foot and heel and pull with both hands on each side towards you. Hold this for 15 seconds and then switch feet. Do this three times for each foot.
  • Finally hold your big toe while crossing one leg over the other. Pull the toe towards you and hold for 15 seconds. Once again do this three times per foot.

It is best to go easy when first stretching your foot and work your way up. If your foot starts hurting, stop exercising and ice and rest the foot. It is advised to then see a podiatrist for help.
